Neuro-Transactional Analysis

The Neuro-Transactional Analysis Association focuses on Psychotherapy and Counselling for therapeutic application, Education for theoretical dissemination and training, and Organization for applying NTA principles within business and workplace settings.

Counseling in NTAEducation in NTAOrganization in NTAPsychotherapy in NTA
This area applies Neuro-Transactional Analysis (NTA) principles to psychotherapeutic practice. It involves using the integrated understanding of TA ego states and neuroscience to diagnose, conceptualize, and treat various psychological issues. NTA counselling aims to help clients achieve psychological well-being and growth by understanding how their brain functions influence their ego states and vice versa. Therapists might, for example, use neuroscientific insights to better address trauma responses rooted in the Child ego state, or to enhance Adult ego state functioning through brain-informed strategies. The Education arm of the association is dedicated to teaching and disseminating NTA theory and practice. This involves developing curricula, delivering workshops, seminars, and training programs for mental health professionals, students, and interested individuals. The goal is to equip practitioners with knowledge of how neuroscience illuminates TA concepts, improving their ability to effectively apply TA in diverse settings. Educational initiatives might cover topics like the neurobiology of ego state formation, brain-based interventions, or research methodologies for NTA.This area focuses on applying NTA principles within organizational and business contexts. It involves using the combined understanding of TA and neuroscience to improve communication, leadership, team dynamics, and overall organizational health. NTA in organizations can help address workplace conflicts, enhance executive functioning (Adult ego state), foster stronger interpersonal relationships, and promote a psychologically healthy work environment by considering the neurobiological underpinnings of human interaction and motivation. For instance, understanding collective “organizational ego states” and their neurobiological drivers could inform strategies for change management or leadership development. This area focuses on the in-depth clinical application of Neuro-Transactional Analysis (NTA) principles within the field of psychotherapy. It involves a profound integration of TA ego state theory with modern neuroscience to diagnose, formulate treatment plans for, and address complex psychological disorders and personality structures. NTA psychotherapy aims to facilitate lasting personality change and resolve deep-seated conflicts by exploring how neurobiological patterns underpin persistent, maladaptive ego state functioning. A psychotherapist, for instance, might leverage insights from neurobiology to help a client rework developmental trauma manifested in a dysfunctional Child ego state, or to systematically build the neural pathways that support a more robust and integrated Adult ego state.

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis is an interdisciplinary field that integrates neuroscience and psychoanalysis to explore the neural basis of unconscious processes and emotional experiences.

Sigmund Freud (1856–1939)

Freud founded psychoanalysis, introducing the concept of the unconscious, which serves as a cornerstone for neuro-psychoanalysis.

Mark Solms (1961– )

Solms is a living pioneer of neuro-psychoanalysis, linking Freud’s theories with contemporary neuroscience, particularly in the study of dreams and the brain’s emotional functions.

Antonio Damasio (1944– )

Damasio, a leading neuroscientist, emphasizes the role of emotions and bodily states in consciousness, contributing to the neuro-psychoanalytic understanding of affective processes.

Neuro-Transactional Analysis

Neuro-Transactional Analysis, a concept developed by Philip Y. Park in 2022, integrates Transactional Analysis’s ego states with neuroscience to explain human behavior and psychological dynamics through brain function and neural pathways.

Eric Berne (1910–1970)

Eric Berne (1910–1970) was a Canadian-born psychiatrist renowned as the founder of Transactional Analysis, a unique theory of personality, communication, and social interaction.

Mark Widdowson (1973-2024)

Mark Widdowson (1973–2024) was a prominent UK-based Transactional Analysis psychotherapist and supervisor known for his significant contributions to integrating TA with neuroscience in the study of depression.

Phillip Y. Park (1960– )

Prof. Drs. Phillip Y. Park (1960– ) is a South Korean scholar and clinician best known as the founder of Neuro-Transactional Analysis, an integrative framework combining Transactional Analysis with neuroscience.

Neuro-Transactional Analysis

Dr. Philip Y. Park’s 2022 concept of Neuro-Transactional Analysis merges the ego states of Transactional Analysis with neuroscience to explain human psychological dynamics and behavior through the lens of brain function and neural pathways.

Neuro-Transactional Analysis, introduced by Philip Y. Park in 2022, offers a novel perspective that elucidates human behavior and psychological interactions by connecting Transactional Analysis’s ego state model with underlying neurological processes.” – Philip Y. Park, Ph.Ds. (Midwest Univ.)

“In 2021, Neuro-Transactional Analysis (NTA), a theoretical framework pioneered by Dr. Phillip Y. Park, represents an interdisciplinary synthesis of the ego state model of Transactional Analysis and contemporary neuroscience. It seeks to elucidate the neurobiological underpinnings of human psychology and behavior by correlating the three distinct ego states (Parent, Adult, and Child) with specific patterns of brain function and neural pathways.”
